TEACHING INTEGRATIVE, LIFELONG, AND ADAPTIVE SKILLS TO YOUTH AND ADULTS
TEACHING INTEGRATIVE, LIFELONG, AND ADAPTIVE SKILLS TO YOUTH AND ADULTS
CDC research shows that more than 60 percent of American adults have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience as a child, and almost a quarter of adults have experienced three or more adverse childhood experiences. Studies have found that childhood trauma casts a long and wide-ranging shadow along the lifespan of an adult, which is associated with elevated risks for many adult psychiatric disorders affecting areas of functioning, and impacts in the forms of diminished health, academic success, and social life.
The cost of not addressing the plight of vulnerable children has short- and long-term impact on the individual child, family, society, and community. This calls for concerted efforts at all levels.
Clinical studies also show that sports and recreation, and arts enrichment programs can help youth establish lifelong healthy and physical activity patterns. Regular participation in these activities can ward off life-threatening diseases, reduce feelings of depression and anxiety, help control weight and obesity, and build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, joints according to the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Sporting activities are vital in efforts to give young people purpose, a sense of community and to discourage them from "negative recreation" (drugs, violence, or premature sexual activity).
In response to a significant disparity to access and an ever-growing need, A Basajjamivule Sanctuary of Peace and Learning: Boxing for Life seeks to identify youth and young adults who are or are predicted to or have had a turbulent transition to adulthood and to provide guidance and education to lay a foundation for success for those impacted by childhood trauma in. While the specific approach is tailored based on the age of the youth or young adult, the goal remains the same: empower the young person to make positive changes in their life. When we address the needs of young and underserved populations, we are working to improve the future of our community and our world.
Over time, A Basajjamivule Sanctuary of Peace and Learning: Boxing for Life will create an environment and a safe space that will be an invaluable resource to youth directly impacted by the childhood trauma, aspiring mentors and the community at large.
